Do plantation shutters help insulate a room
Yes — windows are one of the biggest sources of heat loss in winter and heat gain in summer, and shutters add a solid barrier across them. Made from dense, thermally efficient materials and fitting close to the window with minimal gaps, they slow the movement of air between the glass and the room. That helps keep rooms warmer in winter and cooler in summer, easing the load on your heating and cooling — and, as a bonus, the same solid construction helps reduce outside noise.
What are plantation shutters made from?
We carry the full Norman® shutter range across several materials, so we can match the right product to where the shutter is going. The range runs from moisture-resistant composite (Woodlore®) and a hybrid of engineered timber frames with tough ABS louvres (Woodlore® Plus), through to fully waterproof ABS (Woodlore® Waterproof) and premium solid hardwood (Normandy® and Ultra™). For instance, in a bathroom, kitchen or laundry the waterproof ABS range won’t warp, swell or discolour in the humidity — where a solid hardwood shutter isn’t suited — while for a feature window in a living area the hardwood ranges give the richest timber grain and finish. Whichever room it’s for, we’ll recommend the material that performs best for the job.
What colours do plantation shutters come in?
Norman® offers an extensive range of standard whites, neutrals and timber stains across its shutter ranges — so most homes are covered by the standard palette. And when you need an exact match to a wall, trim or scheme, we can custom paint-match your shutters to any colour you like. It means your shutters can blend seamlessly with the room or stand out as a feature — whichever look you’re after.
Can plantation shutters be motorised?
Yes — with Norman’s PerfectTilt™ motorisation you can adjust a single shutter, a whole room, or every shutter in the house from the palm of your hand. Control them with the backlit, magnet-mountable SmartDial™ remote, or from your iPhone or iPad through the PerfectTilt™ app when paired with the hub. Each shutter runs on a rechargeable lithium-ion battery that lasts up to a full year per charge via USB, and an optional solar panel can extend that even further in sunny rooms. There’s a built-in child- and pet-safety sensor that stops the louvres if something’s in the way — so motorised shutters are as safe as they are effortless. Ideal for hard-to-reach windows, large openings, and anyone who simply loves a bit of home-automation flair.
Where motorisation really earns its place is in the smart features:
