What is the difference between a shade pergola and an all-weather retractable roof?
The difference comes down to fabric, construction and what each system is built to handle.
A shade pergola uses a lightweight acrylic fabric that rolls or folds out across the frame it’s designed to filter sunlight, reduce glare and take the edge off light rain. The fabric is breathable and relatively thin, which makes it excellent for sun protection but not engineered to hold standing water or seal against a heavy downpour. These systems are ideal for the majority of the year and suit most residential outdoor areas well.
An all-weather retractable roof is a different category of product. The fabric is heavier and fully waterproof, tensioned across the frame under load and sealed at the edges with integrated gutters and water channels. When closed, it forms a continuous weatherproof surface nothing gets through. These systems are built to perform in real Canberra conditions: summer storms, strong winds and winter rain, not just fine-weather shade.
If you’re looking to extend your outdoor season, a shade pergola does the job beautifully. If you need to be outside regardless of what the sky is doing, an all-weather system is the right investment.
The Markilux Pergola Compact — the accessible entry into the Markilux range
The Pergola Compact brings the same German engineering and design quality of the Markilux range to smaller terraces and balconies at a more accessible price point. With a maximum size of 4.5m × 4m (18m²) and a slim 125 × 125mm square cassette profile, it’s a tidy, space-efficient system that doesn’t compromise on finish or functionality.
Like the Pergola Classic, it uses Markilux’s tracfix zip-guide technology for a clean, gap-free fabric edge in wind, and sits on adjustable telescopic posts (20–40cm range) that give flexibility during installation. Inclination runs from 5° to 35°, and smart home compatibility is available through Somfy io motors. Optional LED lighting and a retractable side shade (Markilux Shadeplus) can be added for a more complete outdoor room.
If you have a compact courtyard, apartment balcony or smaller alfresco area and want a quality motorised pergola without the footprint or cost of the Classic, the Compact is the natural starting point.

The Markilux Pergola Classic — refined shade for large outdoor areas
The Pergola Classic is Markilux’s elegant shade pergola — a motorised fabric roof designed to cover large areas beautifully. Each unit covers up to 30m², and five can be coupled for up to 150m². Its classic round cassette profile (187mm diameter) gives it a softer, more traditional look than the angular Pergola Stretch, and it can be pitched anywhere from 5° to 45° to suit the installation. Optional accessories include LED lighting, infrared heaters and an integrated solar module (the Markilux Sundrive).
The Pergola Classic is a shade system first. While its Perla FR fabric resists water, it is not engineered as a fully sealed all-weather roof in the way the Pergola Stretch is — it performs best in fine weather and light rain, rather than a heavy Canberra downpour.

What is the Markilux Shadeplus motorised valance?
The Markilux Shadeplus is a retractable front drop screen that attaches to the front profile of a Markilux pergola or folding arm awning. It lowers by up to 2.3 metres at the touch of a button, adding a vertical privacy and wind screen to the open front of your pergola effectively enclosing the space without a fixed structure.
It’s available in motorised or manual crank operation, and works with almost all Markilux pergola models. Fabric choices include blockout options for full privacy, or partially transparent screen fabrics if you want to keep your view while still cutting glare and wind.
For a completely cable-free installation, the optional Markilux Sundrive integrates a solar module directly into the pergola’s guide rail. It captures enough energy to power the Shadeplus radio-controlled motor independently no hardwiring required. It’s a practical solution for pergolas where running power to the front valance isn’t feasible, and keeps the whole system clean and self-sufficient.
What is the Markilux Pergola 210 telescopic post?
The Pergola 210 is a variant of the Markilux Pergola Classic that includes a manually operated telescopic front post. This allows the system to drain effectively at a much shallower pitch as low as 7° compared to the standard 14° minimum required by the Pergola 110. It’s a practical solution for installations where a steep angle isn’t possible or would look out of place, giving you more flexibility without compromising water runoff or fabric performance.
The Helioscreen Vario Pergola — shade and sun protection with a self-supporting structure
The Vario Pergola is Helioscreen’s freestanding shade pergola — it creates its own structure using 60×60mm square front posts, so no existing pergola or building attachment is required. With a maximum projection of 6 metres and built-in side channel gutters for light rain use, it extends your outdoor season beautifully across most of the year. Like the Markilux Pergola Classic, it’s a shade system first — its acrylic fabrics (Helio 92, Helio 86 and Helioshade 100) provide excellent sun protection but are not engineered for heavy rain. A minimum 15° fall is required for water to run off effectively. Motorised operation is standard, with optional sun, rain and wind sensors. Built in Australia with European components, it carries the same 5-year warranty as the All Seasons range.
