All Weather Roofing Systems

What is an all-weather retractable roof system?
A retractable roof system turns any exposed patio, pergola or outdoor area into a fully protected space — open to the sky when you want it, completely covered when the weather turns. Unlike a fixed pergola, it gives you the flexibility to adapt in minutes. Chadwick Designs supplies two of the world’s finest retractable roof systems: the Helioscreen All Seasons and the Markilux Pergola Stretch.

The Helioscreen All Seasons — built tough for Australian conditions
The All Seasons is designed in Europe and built in Australia, engineered for year-round performance in demanding climates. It uses architectural-grade waterproof fabric with integrated water seals for 100% rain protection, and is rated to withstand winds from 59 to 237 km/h — up to Beaufort 11 on the wind scale. A unique high-torque motor maintains bi-directional fabric tension under load, so the system stays taut and secure in strong gusts.

The Markilux Pergola Stretch — award-winning design for generous spaces
Winner of the German Design Award 2021 and R+T Innovation Award 2021, the Pergola Stretch is Markilux’s premium large-area retractable roof. Each panel covers up to 7m × 7m, and up to five panels can be joined to create a covered area of 25m × 7m — making it ideal for large alfresco areas, commercial venues and hospitality spaces. Its slim 163mm cassette profile and minimalist aluminium frame bring a refined architectural quality to any outdoor setting.

Can I add heating and lighting to a retractable roof system?
Yes — both systems support integrated LED lighting. The Markilux Pergola Stretch also accepts infrared heaters mounted to the crossbeam, making it a genuine all-season outdoor room even on a cold Canberra evening. Optional side screens, privacy panels and panoramic windows complete the enclosure.

Can the roof be controlled automatically?
Both systems offer motorised operation with smart controls. The Helioscreen All Seasons supports optional wind and rain sensors for automatic deployment, while the Markilux Pergola Stretch integrates with Somfy io for full smart home compatibility — including independent control of each panel in multi-panel configurations.

Is the Markilux Pergola Stretch waterproof?
Yes. The Pergola Stretch uses Perla FR fabric — a waterproof, flame-retardant textile — with an integrated gutter and column drainage system that channels water away cleanly. A minimum 5° slope ensures efficient drainage even in heavy rain.

Does my pergola need to be pitched for a retractable roof?

One practical advantage of the Helioscreen All Seasons is its trapezium fabric system, which allows the roof to be installed on a flat or near-flat structure. Rather than requiring the entire frame to be pitched for drainage, the fabric shape itself manages water runoff — giving greater flexibility when working with existing pergolas or structures that can’t easily be angled. The Markilux Pergola Stretch requires a minimum 5° slope for effective drainage, which is worth factoring in during the planning stage.

Which retractable roof system is right for my home?
The Helioscreen All Seasons suits exposed sites and properties where high wind resistance is a priority. The Markilux Pergola Stretch suits larger areas and projects where design, scale and accessory options — heating, screening, premium lighting — are the priority. Our team can assess your space and recommend the right fit during a consultation.

What is the difference between the Helioscreen All Seasons and the Markilux Pergola Stretch?

Both are motorised retractable roof systems with waterproof fabric, integrated drainage and a minimum slope for water runoff — and both will keep your outdoor space completely dry. The differences come down to budget, scale and finish.

The Helioscreen All Seasons is the more accessible of the two. Built in Australia and priced accordingly, it’s a serious performer — rated to withstand winds up to 237 km/h and available in over 100 fabric colours with 120+ frame finishes. Each field is 4.5m wide, and fields can be coupled for wider spans. It suits most residential patios and alfresco areas and represents outstanding value for what it delivers.

The Markilux Pergola Stretch is the premium option — a German-engineered system that won both the German Design Award and R+T Innovation Award in 2021. Its cassette profile is exceptionally slim at just 163mm, giving it a more refined, architectural look that integrates cleanly with contemporary homes. Each field spans up to 7m × 7m, and up to five fields can be joined to cover areas as large as 25m × 7m — making it the choice for generous alfresco spaces, commercial venues and hospitality projects. It also supports a wider range of accessories: integrated infrared heaters, RGB LED lighting, side privacy screens and panoramic windows.

In short: if you want a tough, well-priced Australian-made system, the Helioscreen All Seasons delivers. If you’re building a large or architecturally considered outdoor room and want the finest finish and the broadest range of accessories, the Markilux Pergola Stretch is worth the investment.
